Passkeys for Business: Why Passwords Are Fading

September 17, 2026|

For decades, businesses have told employees the same thing: create a strong password, make it unique, change it when necessary, and whatever you do, don’t forget it.

There’s just one problem. Passwords remain a major target for cybercriminals.

Microsoft reported that it blocks thousands of password attacks every second, illustrating just how aggressively attackers pursue login credentials. That’s one reason passkeys for business are becoming an important part of modern cybersecurity strategies.

Instead of creating even more complicated password rules, businesses can start removing passwords from the equation entirely.

What Exactly is a Passkey?

A passkey is a digital credential that allows someone to sign in without typing a traditional password. Authentication is typically completed using something already associated with the employee, such as a smartphone, computer, hardware security key, fingerprint, face scan or device PIN.

Behind the scenes, passkeys use public-key cryptography. The service stores a public key, while the private credential remains protected on the user’s device or security key.

The employee gets an easier login. The business gets stronger business authentication.

Why Are Passkeys Safer Than Passwords?

Passwords can be guessed, reused, stolen from databases, captured by malware or handed directly to an attacker through a convincing phishing page.

Passkeys are designed to resist many of these attacks because there isn’t a reusable password for an employee to accidentally reveal.

They are also tied to the legitimate website or application for which they were created. That makes passwordless authentication significantly more resistant to traditional credential phishing.

If an employee encounters a fake Microsoft 365 login page, for example, the attacker can’t simply trick that person into typing a passkey into a fraudulent password box.

Do Passkeys Make Logging in Easier?

Usually, yes – and that’s a major advantage.

Employees already deal with dozens of applications, accounts, security prompts and password requirements. Complicated authentication can encourage risky shortcuts, including password reuse or storing credentials in insecure locations.

With passkeys for business, signing in can be as simple as using Windows Hello, touching a fingerprint sensor, entering a device PIN or approving authentication from a trusted device.

Better security doesn’t have to mean making employees miserable.

What Are Microsoft Passkeys?

For organizations using Microsoft technology, Microsoft passkeys can help move employee authentication away from traditional passwords.

Microsoft Entra ID supports passkeys using FIDO2 security keys and device-bound passkeys. Microsoft also supports passkey authentication through compatible platforms and devices, giving businesses multiple options when developing a passwordless strategy.

When combined with Entra ID, Conditional Access, multifactor authentication, and proper device management, passkeys can become part of a broader identity security strategy rather than another standalone security tool.

Should Businesses Eliminate Every Password Tomorrow?

Probably not.

Moving toward passwordless authentication should be planned carefully. Businesses need to evaluate which applications support passkeys, how employees will enroll devices, what recovery procedures will look like, and how authentication will work for shared devices, administrators, remote workers, and legacy applications.

A phased rollout is often the better approach.

Start with a pilot group. Establish enrollment and recovery procedures. Train employees. Monitor the results. Then expand the program as your IT team confirms that systems and workflows are ready.

Passkeys Still Require Strong Security Policies

Passkeys aren’t magic.

Businesses still need secure devices, endpoint protection, access controls, account monitoring, employee education and procedures for lost or stolen equipment. Organizations should also maintain secure account recovery methods so an attacker can’t bypass strong business authentication simply by exploiting a weak recovery process.

Think of passkeys as an important upgrade to your security foundation – not a replacement for the rest of your cybersecurity program.
